DAMIEN Cole is looking to help maintain the beauty of the local beaches with the A Cleaner Coast event this weekend.

Starting at noon on Saturday August 17, the event invites people to meet at either the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club, or Bird Rock Cafe in Jan Juc to help clean up the coast.

Mr Cole said in a time when the community is growing so rapidly, events like these are particularly helpful in maintaining the local spirit.

“It’s about bringing our community together while helping the environment.”

The coast clean-up is scheduled to go for two hours, after which the two groups will head up to Bells Beach Brewery for a barbecue and beers.

There will also be live music at the brewery by Jimi Crisp, Jack Meredith, Tom Robb Jarosite, Finnigan August, and others.

A $5 or $10 donation will be required for barbecue and beer.

All donations will go to Ocean Mind, a charity that uses surf programs to help young people who are isolated or disadvantaged (see page 51).

This will be the third A Cleaner Coast program this year, with the first having seen a turnout of over 100 people.

There is also another event planned for a couple months’ time in Anglesea.
