A spectacle of purple for inclusivity
THE City of Greater Geelong is encouraging people to drape themselves in purple this Friday (August 30) to show support for the local LGBTIQA+ community.
Wear it Purple Day, an annual awareness event with a focus on young LGBTIQA+ people, is promoted by student-run not-for-profit organisation Minus18.
A national celebration, Wear it Purple Day strives to foster supportive, safe, empowering and inclusive environments so people in LGBTIQA+ communities can reach their full potential.
The city’s director of community life Robyn Stevens said now is the time to celebrate and promote the value of diversity in the region.
“I encourage community members to wear purple on August 30 and stand with us on the steps of City Hall at 4pm to be part of a movement that has the potential to save thousands of lives through the power of acceptance. Join us and be part of this change,” she said.
The COGG Youth Department will lead Wear it Purple Day as it does with IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia) and National Coming Out Day.
