LOCALS and visitors now have easier access to Point Bunbury in Apollo Bay following the completion of a new coastal trail.

The latest route, starting from the car park on Trafalgar Street, replaces an informal walking track which was closed due to safety concerns.

The new walking trail protects the primary dune system, preserves habitat for local fauna, and safeguards cultural heritage.

Safety netting and way finding signage has also been installed along the path to provide separation from the Apollo Bay Golf Course.

Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority chief executive officer Jodie Sizer thanked the Apollo Bay Golf Club, Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and Apollo Bay Community Voice for their assistance with the project.

“We have created a design that keeps this special part of Apollo Bay safe and accessible for everyone,”

she said.

“Through collaboration, we’ve been able to strike a balance that protects the dune and its history, restores access and achieves the best outcome for the community.

“We’re looking forward to seeing locals and tourists enjoy the new track for many years to come.”

Apollo Bay Golf Club secretary Graham Hill said this community outcome has been a “most rewarding experience.”

“When organisations come together to jointly solve problems, it is amazing what can be achieved.

“We have preserved sensitive land on the southern side of the golf course and opened up a new way for walkers to continue to enjoy the informal Pt Bunbury pathway, with minimal disruption to golfing.”

The closed section of the track will be left to regenerate, aiding in habitat and supporting the stabilisation of the erosion-affected primary dune.
