Saturday marked a significant day in Portarlington Football and Netball Club’s events calendar. The club held its annual Free Family Fun Day, Sponsors Day and Goods and Service Auction. The day started with dozens of kids enjoying rides, jumping castles, pony rides, showbags from the Bendigo Community Bank and sausage sizzle. Sponsors Day kicked off at 11.30am giving the club an opportunity to thank the local and wider community for their ongoing loyalty and support of the club. Club president Andrew Aquilina gave an honest speech to the sponsors about where the club was at and what the plans were for the next 24 months and beyond, touching on subjects like salary cap, recruitment and the points system. The sponsors were also introduced to Darren Ball who has taken over the football manager role this year. Darren revealed more than 25 players from this year’s current list had put pen to paper for 2019, including captain Chris Daniele, Luke Williams, Nick O’Neil, Brock Williamson and the Sabell brothers. To round out the day, the club put on a massive Goods and Service Auction conducted by local auctioneer Luke Campbell. There was a great atmosphere from the huge crowd who came out to support the club and snap up a bargain. All the proceeds from the auction go directly back into the local club. With the prospect of a few new junior football and netball teams being added to the Demons family next year, a large portion of the money raised from the auction will go towards buying new playing equipment, updating the facilities, providing training courses for new coaches, medical supplies and first aid training.
