Aireys PS thrilled by NAPLAN results

AIREYS Inlet Primary School says it is thrilled by the performance of its pupils in the latest NAPLAN results.

School principal Jennifer Abel said 100 per cent of the school’s grade 5 pupils placed in the top two bands in reading in the national tests, which was “unheard of”, especially when compared to the state figure of 40 per cent.

“In nearly all areas, our grade 3 and 5 students considerably outperformed similar schools and state benchmarks and the grade 3 students performed equal to similar schools in writing.

“Student academic growth across the school was extremely high outperforming similar schools and state benchmarks in reading, numeracy and grammar and punctuation and comparable for writing and spelling.

“Considering we demerged from Lorne, Aireys P-12 College at the beginning of 2017, and became our own school entity, we are thrilled to be able to compare our own data, alongside similar schools.

“Our new strategic plan will continue to promote excellence across the curriculum, with a special emphasis on digital technologies, science, critical and creative thinking and the arts.”

She said the staff at Aireys Inlet Primary School was inspired by the unique natural surroundings, passionate about everything to do with the natural world, and committed to conserving it for future generations to enjoy.

“We provide opportunities for the students to be involved in community science and local sustainability research projects.

“Our Year 4-6 students are currently working with Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) looking at the issues threatening the ocean and cleaning up the inlet and learning how to better maintain our coast and local waterways. The students have been involved in bird watching and tree planting to regenerate the sand dunes.

“Our P-3 students are working in the Managowak Sanctuary behind the school and along the beach among the rock pools, using the iNaturalist app to share our observations with people around the world.

“We partner with community and environmental groups such as ANGAIR, GORCC, Friends of Eagle Rock Sanctuary, Parks Victoria and the Friends of East Otways.”
