AITTA has questions about lighthouse tours

THE Aireys Inlet Tourism and Traders Association (AITTA) is questioning the expressions of interest (EOI) process regarding tours of the Split Point Lighthouse, saying the local landmark already has a tour operator.

Last month, the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) announced it would invite parties to submit their interest in obtaining a licence to conduct tours of the lighthouse, built in 1891.

GORCAPA took over management of the lighthouse precinct from the Surf Coast Shire on May 1, and described the EOI process as “an exciting opportunity to enhance the visitor experience at one of the Great Ocean Road’s top landmarks”.

In response to the EOI, AITTA stated a local business had run tours of the Split Point Lighthouse for the past 19 years.

AITTA spokesperson Anne Dansick said she was surprised GORCAPA had only managed the land for two months but was proposing big changes.

“Why has GORCAPA gained approval to run tours itself? Why is GORCAPA reserving its right to run tours? Why is there a need for change unless it’s to give GORCAPA an advantage? Why have other businesses seamlessly had their licences renewed or rolled over from the Surf Coast Shire but this one appears to be targeted?”

She said the lighthouse was very special to the Aireys Inlet community and an important part of tourism to the town.

“We won the Victorian Tiny Town Tourism Award last year because of our great people and our great businesses.

“The current operator consistently averages 4.5 star Google reviews, employs local people, and also works with schools and community groups in the area.”

Applications to the EOI close at 5pm on August 2.
