Amy’s Gran Fondo returns to Great Ocean Road
POPULAR cycling event Amy’s Gran Fondo will return to the Great Ocean Road this September with a new route, more ride options and entertainment thanks to support from the Victorian state government.
Included as part of the Labor Government’s “Regional Events Fund”, the event has welcomed more than 120,000 visitors to the region over the last eight years and aims to raise funds to create a safe bike-riding community in Australia.
Amy’s Gran Fondo – which is led by the Amy Gillett Foundation – is a tribute to champion cyclist Amy Gillett who was killed by a motorist while training in Germany in 2005.
Minister for tourism, sport and major events Martin Pakula announced the return of the race last week.
“We’re proud to be supporting this worldclass cycling event right here in Victoria, along one of the world’s most spectacular coastlines,” Mr Pakula said.
“Major events like Amy’s Gran Fondo capitalise on the tourism strengths of regional Victoria, giving a boost to local jobs and businesses on the Great Ocean Road.”
This year’s event will include the 14km Family Fondo, 45km Medio Fondo and the 120km Gran Fondo. The 65km Gravel Fondo and elite men’s and women’s criterium racing will also return.
The race will be held on Sunday September 15. For more information, visit amysgranfondo.org.au.
