ANGLESEA NEWS AND LOTTO received a top honour at the Victorian and Australian Newsagents’ Association (VANA) gala event, taking home the inaugural award for ‘My Local Community Newsagent of the Year’.

Hosted at the Arts Centre Melbourne, VANA recognised the store as the top community newsagent provider in the state, with local owners Corinne and Paul Nigro ousting three other nominees to take out the award.

After being a finalist in 2021 for the Victorian Newsagent of the Year and the Greeting Cards Shop of the Year, Mr and Mrs Nigro said they were very chuffed to get a win, noting that the award was a true team effort.

“We are thrilled to win the community award and be recognised with all the other outstanding news agencies around Victoria,” owner Mrs Nigro said.

“It was our second year of being nominated for Victorian Newsagent of the Year and our first nomination and win in the inaugural community newsagent division.

“It’s a true credit to all the staff we have here at Anglesea News and Lotto; it’s certainly a team effort and we can’t do it without them and of course our local community.”

Saturday evening’s awards were determined through recommendations and nominations from the VANA, various newsagent suppliers and the Lottery Retailers Association.

Mrs Nigro said Anglesea News and Lotto was honoured to be recognised by the body and their store suppliers, citing the key to having a successful business and winning the award was the strong relationships they have formed with their community and suppliers over an extended period.

“The Anglesea community is absolutely outstanding and so supportive of our business and that has especially been shown during the last couple of difficult years,” Nigro said.

“We had to change the way we operated during the pandemic and had to adapt substantially to make sure we were serving our community and our suppliers the best way possible.

“We have a special passion for our area and our people and for that to be celebrated and acknowledged is something really special.”

Outside of the four walls of the newsagent, Mr and Mrs Nigro continue to be voices of positivity in their community and in other aspects of their professional and personal lives.

Mr Nigro is joint senior football coach at Anglesea Football Netball Club, whilst Mrs Nigro represents her locality as vice-president of the Business and Tourism Anglesea Association.
