Anglesea SLSC clubhouse redevelopment begins

WORK has begun on redeveloping the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club.

Construction is expected to take about 12 months, which will mean Anglesea will have to go through the summer without a clubhouse.

A combination of trying to get funding, planning approval, and consulting with the community has mean that it has taken almost a decade to get to this point.

Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club president Tom Cullen said the finished product would be brilliant.

“The clubhouse will be transformed into a state-of-the-art Surf Life Saving, Training and Community Hub.”

When the existing clubhouse was built almost 60 years ago, the club had around 200 members, but that number now exceeds 1,500.

The building no longer complies with modern health and safety standards.

The new clubhouse has been designed with a view to not only lifesavers and club members, but the whole community.

The redevelopment will cost about $5 million, with the state and federal governements each allocating $1.5 million to the project, the Surf Coast Shire donating $250,000, and a further $1.8 million coming from the club members and friends of the Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club.
