Anglesea tip shop shortlisted for Premier’s award
THE Anglesea Resale Shed has been shortlisted as a finalist for this year’s Premier’s Sustainability Award.
Established in 2013 with the help of local Jim Tutt and affectionately known as the ‘tip top shop’, the facility at the Anglesea landfill centre helps promote benefits of a circular economy by diverting reusable material from recycling and waste and on selling back to the community.
Together with the Anglesea Community House and Surf Coast Shire, the centre helps an estimated 144 tonnes of non-organic material avoid the waste stream annually by being recycled through the shop.
In total the facility has raised over $200,000 for 20 local community groups that, together with about 500 volunteers, also help manage the operation of the shed and promote the benefits of this circular economy initiative to their families, friends, and businesses.
The state government has recognised their efforts, announcing the centre as a finalist for Community Champion in the Waste and Litter Reduction category, the winner to be announced at a ceremony on September 20 in Melbourne.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the Resale Shed is also celebrated for providing an opportunity for locals using disability support services to participate in meaningful experiences that build life skills and confidence, including NDIS participants from Leisure Networks.
