Annual awards recognise inspiring Surf Coast youth making a difference
THE Surf Coast Shire has rewarded inspiring youths for their outstanding contributions to the community.
The four recipients were acknowledged for their commitment to their field, personal achievement, and contribution to community.
Amongst the winners was emerging artist Billy-Jay O’Toole who specialises in using his work to educate the community.
“Every piece connects to Country and shares a story about the significance of a place. It’s an honour to create,” he said.
Mr O’Toole was awarded for his achievements, leadership and devotion in creating awareness and recognition for his Indigenous culture through art.
“It was a bit of a surprise to be nominated and recognised in the community and by the shire youth awards as an emerging artist,” Mr O’Toole said.
The sixth annual youth awards were presented via an online ceremony last Tuesday after being postponed from March.
“Despite such a challenging year we received a total of 25 nominations, which is an outstanding result,” Mayor Libby Stapleton said.
Other award recipients included Alex Marshall for her environmental work, The Winchelsea Youth Leisure Drop In for its community efforts and Zakhele Stevens for sport.
Ms Marshall said it was an honour to be recognised for her work as a young activist.
“I think my passion comes from learning about negative things happening with our environment and our world,” she said.
“I have a tendency to not complain about something unless I’m actively trying to change it.”
Mayor Libby Stapleton congratulated all recipients and nominees for their dedication to their field and community.
“We are extremely proud of all of our young people across the shire and it is important to recognise and celebrate some of their fine achievements,” Cr Stapleton said.
