ART of the Minds are calling for artists to enter their upcoming exhibition which displays artworks from those impacted by mental health.

The exhibition, ‘Contemplation’, allows artists to express themselves, showcasing their own interpretation of the theme in a creative way.

Art of the Minds president Jules Haddock said entries don’t have to be from people who have directly experienced mental illness.

“They might use their art as a way to express their feelings or emotions around their own experiences which can be challenges, hurdles or celebrations.”

The exhibition is open to all abilities and organisers aren’t looking for a particular type of art.

“That’s the uniqueness of how art works from a therapeutic perspective. People pick mediums that suit them and sometimes, they’ll jump from one medium to another,” Ms Haddock said.

“That’s what makes it so interesting because you do get an array of materials and expressions.”

Each artist is encouraged to write a blurb with their piece of work, allowing others to gain more of an understanding of their interpretation.

“It’s really important that people share as much as they want to share, because often people will tell stories in their artwork, but there’s no rules on disclosure.

“It can also be insightful for people to sometimes read about the artist’s back story.

Ms Haddock said people who experience mental illness, as a person or supporting others, often feel unheard.

“That’s what Art of the Minds is all about, letting people who are vulnerable, whether they’re carers, friends, or the person suffering mental illness, feel seen and heard.”

Artist registrations close on September 2, unless maximum numbers are reached sooner.

The Contemplation exhibition will run from October 5 until October 19 at AAH Art and Healing in Aireys Inlet.
