THE Barwon Heads Fire Brigade (BHFB) commemorated its longstanding service to the community at a presentation night on Saturday November 10 at the Barwon Heads Golf Club.

The Brigade – which was established in July 1936 – is made up of an estimated 25 volunteer operational and non operational members who live in Barwon Heads and its surrounding areas. So far this year, the BHFB has attended 50 incidents.

Several service awards were presented, including Brigade life memberships and Firefighter of the Year.

The 2018 Barwon Heads Fire Brigade Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Barb Cummins. The annual award is presented to an agreed member who actively displays the values of camaraderie, concern and mateship, professionalism, loyalty, integrity, courage, innovation and teamwork.

Captain Helen Wood said the purpose of the awards night was to acknowledge the BHFB’s effort in protecting life and property in Barwon Heads, the Bellarine Peninsula and beyond.

“At the dinner we recognised the significant contribution members have made to the CFA and their community with a number of service awards presented and also awarded Brigade Life Membership to three very worthy recipients,”
she said.

She also noted the work of the Brigade could not be carried out if it wasn’t for donations from businesses and organisations in the area that provide ongoing support.

“We could not be as effective without the support of many local businesses and community organisations who regularly donate so that we may purchase vital equipment, so it is also an opportunity for us to say thank you very much for their ongoing support,” she said.

The evening was attended by members of the Brigade including Captain Helen Wood, 1st Lieutenant Brett Mitchell, 3rd Lieutenant Pete Burnett and 4th Lieutenant Matt Taylor.

Community supporters such as representatives from the All Saints Anglican Church Op Shop and members of the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL Sub Branch were also in attendance.
