Barwon Water making a splash about sustainable water usage
BARWON Water is spreading the word about sustainable water usage across the Geelong region with its mascot Drop.
Using a range of activities, giveaways and information, Barwon Water aims to engage with both residents and visitors of the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast regions during the peak period.
In the first of 11 community pop-ups, the team began its Summer Series with hundreds of Nippers in Lorne.
Held in conjunction with the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), more than 500 Nippers also learnt how water compares to other
drinks in terms of sugar content and were reminded about only flushing the three P’s – pee, poo and (toilet) paper.
During January, the population covered by Barwon Water grows from 380,000 people to 580,000, with the summer months timely to focus on the message.
Barwon Water acting general manager of customers, community and strategy Emma Connan said the rising population was placing a great demand on water supplies.
“We’re meeting people where they like to spend time in summer – at beaches, foreshores and holiday parks – to talk about how we can all use water wisely.
“While our storage levels are secure, they can drop quickly and it’s vital we all play our part in helping conserve our water supply.
“From providing practical ways to save water while on holidays, to details about Barwon Water projects in the local area, the Summer Series is a great way to engage with the community.”
Although water restrictions are not currently in place across the regions, community members are reminded the permanent water saving rules across Victoria aim to ensure water is used wisely.
The Barwon Water Summer Series will continue throughout the month, with the next session taking place on Wednesday, January 15 at Portarlington Foreshore.
