Become a Junior Ranger in the school holidays

September 19, 2018 BY

Children and their families can head along to a range of fun activities in Victoria’s parks throughout the school holidays.

THE spring school holidays are nearly here, which means it is time to join in the fun of Parks Victoria’s Junior Ranger program.

The Junior Ranger program offers free nature-based and ranger-hosted activities for children aged 6 to 12 and their families. It is designed to get children out in nature and teach them about Victoria’s parks, wildlife and natural and cultural heritage.

From September 24-October 5, children and their families can head along to a range of fun activities in Victoria’s parks – spend the day with park rangers on a Minibeast Discovery, become a Wildlife Detective, go on a Nature Treasure Hunt, or get your feet wet in a Rockpool Ramble.

Also during this period, Parks Victoria is coordinating a “Bioblitz”, aiming to encourage as many families as possible to undertake photography-based science surveys in parks across Victoria. These surveys help our scientists better understand the amazing diversity of life in our parks.

“The variety of activities we run in our Junior Ranger program help engage kids and families in exploring the natural world around them. It’s wonderful to see kids experiencing the fun and wonder of Victoria’s beautiful parks,” Parks Victoria education and interpretation co-ordinator James Adams said.

“At Parks Victoria, we believe that nature is essential for human health and wellbeing, and everyone should have the opportunity to connect with nature, especially children.

“With spring just beginning, there are plenty of opportunities for families to enjoy the great outdoors. Spending time playing and learning outdoors provides children with developmental benefits such as improved physical and mental health and social connections. All the activities are designed to inspire curiosity.”

All activities are free but bookings are essential, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all sessions.

Find an activity near you, be the first to know what’s going on by signing up to the Junior Rangers Mailing List, and book online at juniorrangers.com.au.
