Meet Liam, a volunteer with Meli’s Lead Tenant program.

Liam is passionate about supporting young people. He exudes warmth, care, and a genuine interest in the wellbeing of those around him.

Currently studying education at Deakin University, Liam also works part-time in a youth support role.

Liam has an admirable list of achievements in the community services sector but says he’s most proud of his position as a Lead Tenant volunteer with Meli.

As a Lead Tenant, Liam lives with young people and helps them develop the necessary life skills to live independently.

Meli Lead Tenant volunteers receive fully subsidised rent and utilities, 24/7 on-call support, and ongoing training.

It’s a natural fit for Liam who loves to make a difference in the lives of others.

“I love empowering young people to help them realise their potential and inspiring them to learn,” he said.

Liam enjoys building a rapport with young people and sharing his knowledge of recycling, house duties, and social skills such as room-mate etiquette.

“I set expectations of what tasks my young person must do rather than tell them what they should not do,” he said.

“I engage them by actively role-modelling and showcasing a healthy adult lifestyle. This experience is valuable for young people and builds foundational life skills that will carry them through life forever.”

So far, he has found the experience of being a live-in mentor very rewarding.

“The young people I live with are respectful and diligent with house responsibilities, open-minded, and willing to take on feedback. We appreciate each other’s downtime but also connect over shared interests like music and physical fitness.”
