YEAR Five Bellbrae Primary School students will be hosting a special charity expo to complement their inquiry into global citizenship.

Tomorrow, November 9, students will have the chance to promote a charity of their choice, with the intent to create awareness around a range of important causes at a special expo event on-site at school.

The charity drive is a part of a global citizenship unit to promote leadership amongst Year Five students who are transitioning to leadership roles at Bellbrae Primary School in 2023.

The unit has allowed for students to explore charities and their impact on the community and has led them to contribute through awareness, promotion and fundraising.

Some of the charities set to feature during Wednesday’s event include World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES), The Resilience Project, The Salvation Army, Geelong Mums and much more.

Year Five teachers Clay Cornish and Lucas Reid have said the children have thoroughly enjoyed working on the unit and can’t wait for the expo.

“Students have been fantastic in their understanding of local, national and international charities and how they can make a difference to help others in need,” Cornish said.

“It has been inspiring to see how students have embraced this initiative and actively contributed to supporting their chosen charity,” Reid added.

Year Five student Mae Steven also said she has loved undertaking the unit and learning more about other communities and charities.

“It has been great to learn about others and the world outside our school,” she said.

“It has been a great experience to not only help others but understand how we can help.”

Students have and will continue to run charity stalls outside of school in the Torquay, Bellbrae and Jan Juc area in the lead up to the event.

Students will have the option to fundraise for their charity and will be organising different presentations and activities for the expo.

Community members are invited to bring a cash donation to donate to any of the chosen charities at the expo.

The event will be run from 2:40-3:30pm in the school gymnasium at 50 School Road, Bellbrae.
