Bellbrae students to Ride2School this March
STUDENTS from Bellbrae Primary School will put their pedal to the metal this March as part of the annual National Ride2School Day event, pledging to move together to promote being active for their social, physical and mental health.
Set to take place officially on Friday, March 24, students from the local school will join over 350,000 students across the nation who will ride, scoot, walk or skate to school to celebrate active travel.
In preparation for the Ride2School Day event, teachers and pupils from the local Surf Coast school have been participating in a ‘Make Your Move’ to school campaign, with fun activities occurring every Friday morning before school to educate students on cycling, pedestrians, and road safety.
The campaign has been created to help build students, parents, and the wider Bellbrae Primary School community’s understanding of active travel to and from school, and how to do it safely.
Bellbrae Primary School Council member Emily Torney said that there were many benefits from riding to school and added that “Students who move their body and mind, arrive at school energised and ready to learn”.
“Riding to school improves their independent mobility, confidence and social connection and it’s also better for the environment,” she said.
Mrs Torney added that many students had begun riding with their parents to school for the very first time this month.
She encouraged more pupils to do the same to embrace the schools ‘Make Your Move’ campaign.
“Organise a riding buddy to make the ride fun and plan the night before so you are not running late!” she said.
“Get your bike, helmet, and bag ready and make sure to conduct a safety check on your bike and helmet.”
To compliment the ‘Make Your Move campaign’, the school have released a clever handbook that students, teachers and parents can follow to become more aware of the benefits of being active.
