MORE than 80 local surfers took part in the return of the Bolt Blowers surfing invitational.

The 16th edition of the popular event at Jan Juc raised more than $8,000 for local mental health community-based programs at Ocean Mind and One in Five.

The 13 teams of seven surfers took to the water on pre 1983 single fin or twin fin surfboards.

Asher Lens won the paddle battle and scored double points for his team in the event final.

A retro surf skate show and shine, a paddle battle and an after party added to the entertainment and fun on the day.

Event organiser Marty Hamer said he was very happy with the successful return of the bright and colourful surfing spectacular.

“It was so much fun, and we were all incredibly stoked with how it all went from a surfing and fundraising perspective.

“The minute of noise before the event started was just classic. The newcomers really seemed to love it and the madness that goes with it.

“We loved how many positive conversations about mental health were happening throughout the day, it certainly was front of mind for many which was great.”

Willis Droomer throws caution to the wind on a pre 1983 surfboard.

Mr Hamer said the event would no doubt be back bigger and better in 2026.

“Next year we will step it up and get some more corporate sponsorship to help out with the event.

“We love the work our charity partners are doing, particularly Ocean Mind as a local cause. They’ll be supported again for sure.”
