Book Week returns for another chapter

HUNDREDS of primary school pupils from across the region brought their favourite story book characters to life last week through costume.

Leopold Primary School’s annual Book Week celebrations culminated with a dress up day on Thursday, with inspiration drawing from Harry Potter, superheroes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Wizard of Oz and Where’s Wally?

The week kicked off with a visit from Author Anna Ciddor on Monday, who explored the art of developing a novel through her most recent book The Family with Two Front Doors.

There was an Indigenous Book Swap on Wednesday, which encouraged children to swap an old book they had loved and wanted others to enjoy or one they had grown out of for another book they would like to read, with all money raised and books swapped going to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Visiting author Renee Treml showed children where her ideas came from and how to write a picture storybook.

The theme for this year’s dress up day was “Find Your Own Treasure” and gold coin donations from the day went to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and Salvation Army.

At Anglesea Primary School, the Book Week dress-up parade included not only existing pupils but 18 kindergarten children who will be attending the school in 2019.

The school was also delighted to welcome author Ali Villani to the special day.

Ms Villani, a mother to two Anglesea Primary School pupils, is the author of Ali the Shiny Sparkly Unicorn – a beautifully illustrated children’s book with an important message for little people to “be yourself”.

Book Week was also celebrated with a parade at Torquay Primary School.
