HUNDREDS of community members gathered at Torquay Bowls Club for its centennial celebration on the weekend.

Torquay Bowls Club president Joe Issell said the celebration was the perfect way to honour 100 years of work from past and present club members and supporters.

“It was magnificent to see the community support on the day.

“Seeing so many young families, that was what was so pleasing. It’s a sign that this is a family place and something we pride ourselves on being here at the Torquay Bowls Club.

“It was one of the busiest days at the club that I can recall. It felt like the entire community turned up for what was a very special milestone.”

The event hosted a range of children’s activities ranging from a wildlife expert to face painting, as well as a community barbecue, barefoot bowls, music and speeches from key committee members.

The guest list included Surf Coast mayor Liz Pattison, member of Polwarth Richard Riordan, Corangamite federal member Libby Coker, and regional and state bowls representatives.

“The 100-year celebration was really about the people who were involved, and it all comes back to the community. It’s a real community hub today and we hope to remain one for the next 100 years,” Mr Issell said.

“100 years in the same spot in Taylor Park is also a pretty bloody good effort as well, but again, that’s a testament to the people who are and have been a part of the club.”
