Bowls club hits member mark

AARON Lawson is the 1,000th member of the Torquay Bowls Club.

Having been at the bowls club for eight months, Aaron, 28, is a newcomer to Torquay with his partner Laura, having recently spent time in Canada and Tasmania.

Aaron and Laura said it was the community spirit and friendly atmosphere at the club that attracted and enticed them to join as social members.

The couple intend to stay within the region for a while, having just bought a block in the Quay 2 estate.

Aaron works in the building industry, while Laura is employed at Barwon Health.

The club held a celebration to congratulate Aaron on his helping achieve the benchmark.

While not a bowler, Aaron has had a few attempts at the sport and has thoroughly enjoyed it.

“It was the views from the deck and the atmosphere that lured us to visit with friends and enjoy a drink with a meal,” Aaron said.

Torquay membership director Gill Pritchard said there were key moves made by the club to achieve its outstanding result of 1,000 members.

Gill said the introduction of twilight bowls had been a catalyst to creating a vibrant bowling atmosphere, which had flowed on to making the club a social hub for the wider community.

Torquay Bowls Club was also named Australia’s number one bowls club of the year by Bowls Australia in October 2017.

Torquay Bowls Club was honoured with the award after its rapid growth in membership and innovation in the bowling sector.
