Bowls club rolling out new entertainment series
THE Torquay Bowls Club is aiming to become a winter destination for entertainment, food and community events, building on the success of a sold-out comedy show featuring Australian comedian Dave Hughes.
The Torquay Esplanade venue is already off to a strong start to the cooler months, with a packed crowd turning out for its first major event under new management.
Since taking over the venue two months ago, manager Andrew Routley and his team have focused on lifting service standards and broadening the club’s appeal beyond the bowling season.
Drawing on experience gained at the Gold Diggers Arms and the Torquay Hotel, Routley has introduced a refreshed entertainment program, a new kitchen team and an updated menu as part of the venue’s next chapter.
Routley said the response to the comedy night exceeded expectations.
“We had a packed house and everyone enjoyed a full evening of laughs,” he said.
“It’s the first time we’ve done something since I came in, and to get it all coming together that way it is now is fantastic.
“Dave himself was just terrific and to lock down someone of his calibre was a great get.”

The bowls club is now preparing for a busy winter calendar, with appearances from comedian Peter Helliar, Drag Bingo and performers from The Piano Bar already locked in.
“Winter is a tricky time on the Surf Coast for hospitality, but regardless people still want to get out and be social,” Routley said.
“We are excited with what we’ve got to come. It worked really well for us at my past venues, and we are sure it’ll be a hit here as well.”
With competitive bowls on hiatus over winter, Routley said the coming months provided the perfect opportunity for locals to experience the changes at the bowls club.
“The space we’ve got is exceptional,” he said.
“It’s a real hub of the community and it gives us a great sense of purpose to set Torquay on the right course.
“Keep your ears out for more exciting news in the pipeline. It’s onwards and upwards for us.”
