Breaking stigma over breakfast

Get involved this World Mental Health Day at Bunnings Torquay.

ON WORLD Mental Health Day, Art of the Minds is inviting the Surf Coast community to come together for HIS Story: Big Boys Breakfast, a free community event raising awareness of men’s mental health, recovery and the importance of connection.

To take place at Bunnings Torquay on October 10 between 7am and 8.30am, the event offers locals the chance to start their day with a free barbecue breakfast and barista coffee, while listening to powerful stories of hope, recovery and resilience.

The Big Boys Breakfast will take place on Friday, October 10th.

The morning will feature:

Motivational speakers sharing lived experiences around mental health and recovery

Community stalls providing information, resources and local support services, and

Live entertainment by Lachy Hurrel, winner of the 2024 Art of the Minds Surfcoast Song Contest

“We are excited to provide this free event to our Surf Coast community, an opportunity to wake up bright and early on World Mental Health Day, come together and hear stories from those in our community,” Art of the Minds president Sarah Molnar said.

“Our aim is to create a community that acknowledges lived experience, supports those living with mental illness and continues to reduce stigma through mental health literacy and exposure to storytelling.”

Art of the Minds is a local non-profit organisation that, throughout National Mental Health Week (October 6–12), hosts events across the Surf Coast, championing conversations that normalise the experience of mental illness for all ages and demographics.

Earlier this year, Art of the Minds launched the MHFA 500, a campaign aiming to train more than 500 local Surf Coast residents in mental health first aid for free. The first session will kick off during this year’s Mental Health Week festival.

The HIS Story: Big Boys Breakfast is proudly supported by Surf Coast Events, Torquay Lions and Bunnings Torquay.
