Bringing purpose, one thread at a time
AN ANGLESEA sewing group is continuing to bring purpose to the lives of many, one thread at a time.
The Sewing with a Purpose group, based out of the Anglesea Community House, gather several times a month to sew products for people in need.
Since its inception three years ago, the group has donated thousands of products to local charities and programs.
Members are hard at work this winter with more than 25 different projects on the go.
These include kangaroo pouches for Surfcoast Wildlife Rescue, toy bunnies for Geelong Mums, book bags, dog mats, sanitary pads for women in Fiji and children’s clothing.
Group convenor Deb Elliot said the group continued to unite the community for the greater good.
“The group is just going from strength to strength and remains an important part of our town fabric.
“We had feedback from a member recently that the group has changed her life. She didn’t know anyone when she moved to Anglesea, and we were here for her.
“The sessions have just got a really great spirit and fantastic camaraderie. We just laugh and laugh over the sewing machines. I don’t even know how we can hear each other.”
Ms Elliot said the group was not limited in the projects they were willing to take on.
“We will take on any challenge from any organisation or person in need.
“We recently did some special dog blankets as it’s a hard time of year for pets during the depths of winter.
“We’ve been doing shopping bags for Geelong Mums to stop plastic pollution as well as face-washers, which can be made for much cheaper than buying in a store. You can get 15 washers out of a $2.70 towel.
“We’ve got some tracksuits to make up soon and of course the toy rabbits are always really cute.”
Sewing with a Purpose meet on the first, third and fifth Monday of each month from 1pm to 3pm.
