Call out for local ideas to enrich 2026 Games

THE City of Greater Geelong and the state government are urging local businesses, community organisations and tourism operators to send through ideas to help make the 2026 Commonwealth Games an event to remember.

Tourism Greater Geelong and The Bellarine said the Victorian government’s recent “call for ideas” presented a fantastic opportunity for residents and businesses to make an impact on the international event, which will showcase athletes from 72 countries and territories.

“We’re certainly going to encourage tourism operators to get involved in this consultation so they can put forward their ideas,” TGGB deputy executive director Tracy Carter said.

“We would hope to see a lot of activations that are very signature to the Geelong and Bellarine regions.
“People and businesses might do things with bollards like the ones you see on the Waterfront, some of our food and wine operators might create dishes that connect the region with the games, or even some of Geelong’s previous Comm Games athletes might get involved.

“What we’d like to see is a connection between the destination and the sort of experience you’d expect being at the Commonwealth Games.”

Geelong will serve as one of four regional hubs for the Commonwealth Games in four years’ time.

As part of the call-out, the state government released a set criteria on what it would like submissions to address:
– Showcasing and activating the regions
– Developing Victoria 2026’s cultural program
– Supporting and celebrating Traditional Owner and Aboriginal organisations
– Engaging with local communities and sporting associations, and
– Hosting preparation for sporting events or training.

Geelong mayor Peter Murrihy said the opportunity to suggest ideas for the 2026 Commonwealth Games would allow people to highlight the best qualities of the region.

“The Games will bring athletes and spectators from all over the planet, and we want them to experience everything our region has to offer.

“There’s no doubt we will be a world-class sporting host, but we also want our guests to take in our culture, our hospitality, and the warmth and generosity of our community.

“The state’s EOI process is broad, and I urge Geelong organisations to submit any ideas, big or small.

“This is a chance for local organisations to get involved in and benefit from the Games, while helping to create a genuine buzz around the city.

“If you think your organisation can offer a service or stage an event that would generate economic or cultural benefit, please put it forward.”
