THE Surf Coast Shire is calling on residents to help shine a light on the volunteers, leaders and change-makers who quietly make a big difference in the community.
The annual Local Legends awards program recognises individuals and groups whose efforts have made a positive impact across the shire, from long-serving volunteers and organisation leaders to innovators and community advocates.
Nominations will close on March 15, with this year’s Local Legends to be announced and celebrated at a council event during National Volunteer Week in May.
Councillor Joel Grist encouraged residents to nominate those whose contributions often go unrecognised.
“I’m sure many of us know these people who make such significant contributions to our community with so little fuss, giving up that precious thing – their own time – for the good of others,” he said.
“They share their energy, skills, passions and inspiration helping to make Surf Coast Shire a better place and help power organisations doing truly meaningful work.
“Nominate a Local Legend and help recognise their invaluable contribution to community life.”
Award nominations are open across four categories.
Individual can be put forward in the Community Commitment category, which recognises people with a sustained and substantial record of service, or the Community Impact category, which celebrates innovators, leaders and pioneers whose contributions have made a remarkable difference.
Group can be nominated in the Community Inclusion category, which recognises programs that promote diversity and inclusion, and the Volunteer Excellence category, which acknowledges those demonstrating overall excellence and impact in their work.
Nominations can be submitted online at surfcoast.vic.gov.au/LocalLegends, by phoning 5261 0600, or in person at council’s civic building at 1 Merrijig Drive, Torquay.
