Carers project makes strong launch
A SOLID launch of the Surf Coast Shire’s Caring for Carers Network project has facilitators excited for how it will grow in the coming months.
Caring for Carers and Neighbourhood Houses Barwon community development officer Jo Zdybel said more than 80 people and 25 organisations attended the initiative’s launch earlier this month, a larger than expected turnout.
“It was a great chance for organisations, carers and those interested to share ideas and talk at length about the project,” Ms Zdybel said.
“The project itself will end in August and from there we hope to have a better idea of how we can continue to grow this network and hopefully have a Facebook page up and running for future communications.
“But it was a great turnout at Torquay’s TIA Hall and we’re extremely happy with how it went, way over what we were expecting.”
Carer support services in attendance included Carer Gateway, Carers Victoria, genU Carer Support and Cultura.
Ms Zdybel said other carers networks have taken an interest in the shire’s latest project, particularly towards the Greater Geelong area.
The project will also look at hosting regular information sessions at local neighbourhood houses around the Surf Coast, most likely in Torquay.
“We’d certainly encourage everyone to look out for more announcements in the coming months. In the meantime head to the shire website, our website at Neighbourhood House Barwon or by contacting me directly,” Ms Zdybel said.
“There’s still a range of services out there that people can utilise, and we still encourage local carers to make use of those.”
