MATCHWORKS and the Geelong Football Club are again running a joint program to tackle youth unemployment in the region.

Geelong’s youth unemployment now sits at 9.9 per cent, and the 10-week Cats Match aims to reduce these rates by supporting young job seekers to become job-ready, while improving their health and wellbeing.

More than 20 young job seekers started the Cats Match program last week, with Cats AFLW players in attendance at the launch at the Deakin Cats Community Centre.

MatchWorks executive general manager Renae Lowry said previous programs had given hope and purpose to unemployed youth in the Barwon region.

“We are delighted to continue working with the Geelong Cats to make a difference to young people’s lives in the community.

“Participants learn crucial skills to overcome previous barriers to employment so they can reach their potential, and the health and wellbeing sessions conducted by Geelong Cats gives participants the tools to improve their physical and mental health in their daily life.”

Geelong Cats general manager of community development Sarah Albon said the club was proud to see the Cats Match program move into its fourth year in 2020.

“Cats Match has a positive impact on local young adults who are searching for employment.

“We are really proud of our ongoing partnership with MatchWorks and their parent company genU, which sees a co-delivered and meaningful program delivered in our region.”
