CHRISTIAN College Surf Coast was one of many schools across the region to take part in Book Week, with students and teachers dressing up as their favourite story book characters to mark the literature celebration.

Book Week, which was celebrated from August 20-26, celebrates Australian children’s literature, while promoting the value of books for the education, enjoyment and enlightenment of children all around the country.

Christian College Surf Coast Prep to Grade Four students paraded their costumes on Friday, showing off their favourite story book characters in front of family and friends.

Costumes included Buzz Lightyear, Harry Potter, Trolls, Super Girl, Australian cricket players and Willy Wonka.

To cap the morning festivities, pupils were given a live performance by the teachers, as they reenacted Rod Campbell’s picture book ‘Dear Zoo’.

Teachers dressed as a piranha, a bear, Minnie Mouse, a sailor and Winnie the Pooh before a real life dog popped out to end the story at a climax.

Christian College Surf Coast campus librarian Katherine Moore said Book Week was an amazing opportunity to promote literacy skills at school, while providing children with the opportunity to dress up and have some fun.

“The Book Week occasion is awesome to get all the kids, parents, and teachers together for a day of celebrating children’s literature,” Ms Moore said.

“Every year we are absolutely blown away by the creativity of all the dress-ups and this year was no different.

“The kids looked great when they rocked up to school, to the point that I couldn’t even recognise some children because their dress-ups were so amazing.

“While the parents are probably exhausted from helping their children with costumes and chasing them around to get books for the pop-up bookstore, the kids certainly enjoyed every moment of the fun.”

Altogether the day was filled with plenty of joy for all, students and teachers said they already couldn’t wait for next year’s event.
