Challenging the Mind: Local triathlon raises awareness
MORE than 30 people from the Surf Coast and Greater Geelong region have pushed themselves to their physical limits to raise funds for Movember in honour of their friend Finley Dale who they lost to suicide in 2019.
Held on Saturday (March 4), the group set off on a three-leg triathlon from Lorne to Fairhaven and back, paddling 13km, riding 32km on a bike and running 16km to create positive conversations and awareness of mental health.
Spearheaded by Finlay’s friend James McGlashan, the team first thought of the campaign in 2019, however due to pandemic restrictions and travel bans the event only kicked off for good in 2021.
On the weekend, it rose to the heights that McGlashan and his friends had hoped for, attracting its biggest field yet and challenging the body and the mind.
“We had phenomenal numbers, there was 33 paddlers, just south of 30 bike riders and over 30 runners which was a huge increase from previous years,” McGlashan said.
“Everyone kept their spirits high throughout the event and stayed together even through the hard conditions which was pleasing and very special.
“It was all about doing it as a team, so it certainly wasn’t a race but more about raising awareness and championing the cause together which we did successfully.”
McGlashan said the show of support from the general public had been outstanding, with donations to their fundraising already exceeding $12,000.
“It’s a huge increase from $8,000 last year and $4,000 the year before,” McGlashan said.
“Because we’ve been able to reach out to different communities and not just close friends, it allowed us to grow the event further.
“In the first year I did it I would have recognised every name in the fundraising list, whereas this year I don’t know half of the people.”
McGlashan said that while the event took a physical and mental toll on their bodies, they were certainly keen to facilitate the event once again in 2024.
Fundraising will remain open for the campaign till November 1, and can be supported at au.movember.com/team/2419990?mc=1&utm_medium=share&utm_source=dynamic&utm_campaign=copy-clipboard
