COMPETITIVE wood chopping will take place at Blackman’s Brewery for the first time, as the Torquay brewery hosts an event with the Western Victorian Axeman’s Association later this month.

The brewery will host its inaugural Wood Chopping Championship in its beer garden, featuring 12 underhand competitors and 12 standing block competitors.

Competitors will go one-on-one in each discipline, aiming to smash their way through the wood in the fastest time possible.

Live music will follow the finals and the presentation of the winners.

Blackman’s Brewery owner and head brewer Renn Blackman promised a fun-filled day for the whole family at an event akin to the many local chopping competitions staged at fairs and shows in years gone by

“When you’re young and you go to the show and you see the woodchopping, it’s a really amazing experience,” he said.

“I’ve got a few mates and over the years we’ve talked about how awesome it’d be to have a wood chopping event in Torquay – having a beer and a meal and watching people chop wood, it’ll be great.”

The Wood Chopping Championship will be held in the beer garden at Blackman’s Brewery,

26 Bell Street on June 29 from 12 noon to 5.30pm.

The event is sponsored by Echo Beach Landscapes and Ample. Entry is $5, with entry free for children under 10.
