EMERGENCY services are responding to some kind of chemical spill or hazard in Torquay.

The hazard is taking place at a property on Messmate Road, between Coombes and Grossmans roads.

According to an “advice” message posted on the VicEmergency website by the CFA at 11.10am, there is a chemical smell that presently poses no threat to the community to the immediate east of Messmate Road towards the Surf Coast Highway, but people should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions.

The advice suggests people in that area do three things:

  • Avoid the area as emergency services are investigating the source of the hazard.
  • Remain indoors in the Messmate Road area
  • Keep windows and doors shut.

If you are experiencing any symptoms that may be due to exposure, seek medical advice or phone Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.

Anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness and difficulty breathing should phone Triple Zero (000).

Messmate Road has been closed to traffic at its intersections with Coombes and Grossmans roads.
