PUPILS at Christian College’s Surf Coast campus got into the Olympic spirit on Friday last week with a little help from a popular root vegetable.

The school hosted its second quarterly Potato Olympics, with students from Prep to Grade 4 bringing in a potato to compete in a series of Olympic sports disciplines.

Pupils in each class represented 10 different countries and helped their “potathlete” compete in skateboarding, athletics, gymnastics and torch relay.

The event also included an opening ceremony and the lighting of the Olympic torch which was carried out by senior grade four students.

Parents were invited to attend the opening ceremony and cheer the athletes on throughout the challenges.

The Koala was the 2024 Potato Olympics mascot.

Head of campus Debbie Riddle said the Potato Olympics went down as an instant classic.

“It’s a great way of getting around the Olympics by doing something fun and inclusive.

“We did something similar a few years and it was a huge success, so we were thrilled to bring it back.

“The pupils had a lot of fun parading around to their countries’ national anthem and then taking their potato through the challenges.”
