THE City of Greater Geelong is backing community concern regarding plans to build a train stabling facility on 61 hectares of privately-owned farmland in Waurn Ponds, and is urging the state government to consider alternative locations.

The council voted to make a submission to Amendment GC104 after Rail Projects Victoria – the state government body that wishes to compulsorily acquire the land – requested a change to the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme.

The city is concerned that the proposed acquisition, development and use of the facility would affect operations at the historic “Cromer” farm, labelling the decision as one that needed to be “carefully considered”.

Kardinia Ward councillor Ron Nelson said while the city recognised a need for a train stabling facility in the Waurn Ponds area, he couldn’t agree that the proposed acquisition – which would carve the farm in two – was appropriate.

“I’ve visited the family farm a couple of times and I don’t believe this is the right location.

“While this is a state government decision, council is committed to providing assistance and support to stakeholders by making a submission. It’s important to get this right the first time.”

The city’s submission will request RPV expands the Advisory Committee Terms of Reference to review all available site options for the facility.

It will request a comprehensive assessment of all potential site options is made available to stakeholders, while also suggesting the hearing for October is deferred to allow community members ample time to have their say.

Calls for RPV to minimise off-site noise, light and visual impacts will also be outlined.
