MORE than 500 people are expected to hit the sand this January and participate in the 15th edition of the Tim Gates Classic.
The January 4 event will see locals and visitors take to Fairhaven Beach in memory of Tim Gates, who lost his life on the beach 15 years ago.
Athletes will have the choice of completing the 10km run or 5km walk/run along the beach.
All funds raised will go towards the Fairhaven SLSC, helping the club purchase equipment and run education programs on the beach.
Sarah Gates, Tim Gate’s daughter and the event’s organiser, said excitement was high for the biggest event yet.
“Preparations are coming along really well and our small committee of three are ready to bring plenty of enthusiasm to this year’s event.

“Registrations opened a few weeks ago, and it’s been good. Most of them will come through in the week or days leading up to it. The hope is to get 500.
“We are confident moving the event forward a week from usual will help us to attract more holidaymakers and locals alike who are keen to have a run or a walk.”
Following the race, live music, food and drinks will be available at the Fairhaven SLSC.
“We’d love it if people can hang around, have a drink and really settle in. We’ve found the last few years that element has fallen away, so bringing it a week forward into that holiday period will be a great thing.
“Having a drink down at the surf club was one of my dad’s favourite things to do, and we invite all our participants to come and enjoy the evening.”
