Clothes dump draws community ire
PILES of clothes, toys and household items dumped in front of Geelong charity bins have outraged locals and led to calls for more consideration from donors.
Residents continued leaving their unwanted goods at donation bins in the Belmont Village carpark on High Street despite the bins overflowing, increasing a toll on volunteers.
Heavy rain last week caused significant damage to bundles of items left on the ground, meaning they went to the tip instead of disadvantaged people.
Even without extreme weather like last week’s storms, items left outside are usually discarded by charities due to weather damage.
Several local charities including St Vincent de Paul, the Salvation Army and Brotherhood of St Laurence accept good-condition items at bins or in-store at op shops, where they can be moved to a good home.
