Local clubs contribute to bushfire relief

COMMUNITY Clubs Victoria (CCV) recently announced that the combined totals of its member clubs fundraising efforts for the bushfire relief efforts have exceed $500,000.

Torquay SLSC is one of the CCV members to contribute to this total.

While the Surf Coast was not directly affected by the bushfires, Torquay SLSC saw the need to help lifesaving clubs less fortunate than their own.

When they got together with neighbouring club Jan Juc SLSC for their annual “friendly” competition, the club held a raffle to raise funds for Mallacoota SLSC, who had lost much of their equipment in the fires.

Torquay SLSC fundraising director Lanie Conquest said they were happy to help a club in great need.

“The funds will be used to fund new lifesaving equipment for the local primary school’s Nippers Program that the Surf Club runs.

“It’s our small way of helping them out during their recovery period – from our Nippers to theirs.”

Together the clubs raised more than $650 for Mallacoota SLSC.

CCV president Leon Wiegard praised the contribution of the member clubs that helped contribute.

“Our clubs don’t just service the community, they are the community, and it’s been fantastic to see that spirit encapsulated in their response to this crisis.”
