Coastal erosion causes closures at Marengo Beach
GREAT Ocean Road and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) has temporarily closed an access point to Marengo beach due to coastal erosion.
GORCAPA barricaded the beach access at Marengo Beach last week after a series of high tides and large swell patterns caused erosion to a kilometre stretch of the sand dunes.
“We have temporarily closed the Marengo beach access stairs due to erosion activity that occurred [last] Tuesday night,” GORCAPA Acting Director of Environment and Emergency Management Caleb Hurrell said.
“We’re asking all locals and visitors to seek alternative safe entry via the ramp located in front of the Marengo Caravan Park while we assess the damage.
“We’re monitoring the erosion closely and working on restoring access to the beach.
“The temporary stair closure will remain in place to protect public safety and we’ll keep you informed when the access point reopens.”
GORCAPA is reviewing its erosion management plans for the area.
