A SERIOUS collision near Separation Creek forced the closure of the Great Ocean Road in both directions between Lorne and Wye River earlier today.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash between a car and a bus near the Artillery Rocks lookout at about 10.30am to assess six people, and two air ambulance helicopters were also dispatched.

A VICESES spokesperson said volunteers from the Lorne unit attended the scene at 10:55am, and were back in the station by 11.54am.

Two people were trapped in the crash, but both were safely extricated by VICSES at about 11.30am.

Heavy haulage and a tow truck arrived on scene shortly afterwards. CFA units also attended.

Motorists were advised to allow extra travel time for the significant inland detour via Deans Marsh and Skenes Creek.

The road closure was under Victoria Police control, and the road re-opened at 3.42pm after conditions were made safe and the completion of investigations.

VicRoads crews assisted emergency services with traffic management along the detour.
