Community safety and crime prevention group launched
A new local crime prevention initiative was launched last week in Armstrong Creek, bringing together Victoria Police, local leaders, and community groups.
The Community Safety and Crime Prevention Group (CSCPG) aims to enhance safety and address crime concerns in rapidly growing areas such as Mount Duneed, Armstrong Creek, the Surf Coast, Grovedale and Waurn Ponds.
Federal Corangamite MP Libby Coker, who convened the group, joined the inaugural meeting along with representatives from schools, sporting clubs and community groups.
“These are well-policed, safe suburbs, but there is a growing need for greater community engagement with local police,” Ms Coker said.
“Our police put locals right at the heart of how they tackle crime in these communities – they deserve our support and always welcome feedback. This group will provide the perfect forum for that to occur.”
The CSCPG aims to work with local stakeholders and community members to identify concerns, address safety issues, and receive crime prevention advice.
The group will meet quarterly, with updates from local police on proactive policing activities and crime statistics for each suburb.
Acting Senior Sergeant Stephen Bull said community engagement was crucial.
“Police place great importance on regular engagement with the Greater Geelong community,” Mr Bull said.
“Through the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Group, local residents and police will discuss community safety and local issues.”
“During these sessions, police will share local policing priorities, upcoming operations and crime prevention initiatives with the community.”
Ms Coker said Victoria Police already had a strong connection with local communities and the group sought to strengthen these ties further through increased engagement with local leaders and residents.
Ahead of the winter period, Ms Coker encouraged residents to secure their homes and vehicles and store valuables safely when away.
