THE hammers and saws are flying in Mount Duneed with the locality’s new Community Shed officially opening its doors.

Tenants of the facility, the Mt Duneed Men’s Shed (formerly the Grovedale Men’s Shed), are one of 14 such groups operating in the region, providing the opportunity for their members – many of whom are older and retired – to remain active and connected.

The group has been meeting in temporary sites in recent years, most recently at Foundation 61 in Mountt Duneed.

While the Men’s Shed will manage the Mt Duneed Community Shed, it will aim to engage other community groups by hiring out the space on a regular basis. There are no barriers as to who can use the shed, to maximise its value and to use by the community.

City of Greater Geelong councillors Ron Nelson and Bruce Harwood officially opened the newly constructed shed, located off Sovereign Drive in the Armstrong Mount Duneed estate, on Sunday last week.

Geelong mayor Peter Murrihy said the community shed was one of many investments designed to cater for the continued growth in the area.

“It’s terrific to see this facility completed with the council contributing $645,000 toward the project.

“The Mt Duneed Community Shed will not only provide a home for the Men’s Shed, it will also allow for the group to continue to flourish, providing new and current members with the opportunity to stay active and involved.

“The multipurpose creative space will ensure the facility is appealing to the broader community, along with providing for artistic residents from around the region.”

Cr Nelson said he looked forward to seeing the new facility buzzing with activity.

“The past two and a half years have taught us the importance of connection and this facility will go a long way to promoting interaction and a social outlet for members of the Mt Duneed community.

“Community groups like the Mt Duneed Men’s Shed play a vital role in connecting residents with one another, with benefits in mental health and improved resilience.”

The Mt Duneed Men’s Shed provided an internal fit-out of the building using an $80,000 Victorian Government grant awarded in late 2021.

South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman said the new facility would provide an opportunity for men in the region to remain engaged and supported.

“Men’s Sheds provide an important way for men to come together and to share their life stories with one another, build their skills, and give back to their communities.

“I’m proud to have announced funding to provide the tools the Men’s Shed needs to get started right now.”
