FRIENDS of Taylor Park were joined by S&C Electric Company earlier in the week for a corporate environment day and to celebrate the company’s $15,000 donation.

About 25 employees from S&C Electric Company helped volunteers on Wednesday, February 5, concentrating on watering and fixing the stakes around the plants following the hot weather.

S&C Electric Company regional marketing manager Ebony Edwards said the environment day was part of their carbon offset responsibilities.

“Each year we calculate our carbon dioxide amount and then we give that to organisations.

“We recognise the good work that they’re doing [Friends of Taylor Park] in the local Torquay community and it’s important to be able to help out.”

This was the first time a corporate environment day has been hosted by Friends of Taylor Park, with the volunteer group normally meeting once a month to plant new vegetation, remove weeds and maintain existing plantings.

The $15,000 donation from the company is also part of off setting its carbon emissions, going to different groups around Australia and Asia.

Friends of Taylor Park will put the funding towards its conservation efforts and ensuring the park stays at its existing size.

Group co-ordinator Ian Convery said receiving the money would make a huge difference to the group.

“The only money we have at the moment is coming through selling aluminium cans, so we’re only talking hundreds of dollars, and this has given us thousands of dollars.

“It makes us a lot stronger and means that we can do bigger projects.

The funding will also allow the group to be able to fund their own projects and initiatives without relying on grants from other organisations.

The group meets on the second Saturday of every month and welcomes new members.
