MORE than 60 people celebrated and honoured stories of courage and bravery at Art of the Minds Big Boy Breakfast this week.

The Big Boys Breakfast highlighted the challenges men face in

managing their own mental health and celebrated courageous heroes who have left a lasting legacy for future generations to reflect upon and be inspired by.

Chris Henson and Shaun O’Callaghan.

The event was headlined by special guest presenter and former AFL player Lance Picioane.

Best known for his eight-year career with Adelaide, Hawthorn and North Melbourne, Picioane is also the founder and chief executive officer youth mental health foundation Love Me Love You.

Lyndsey Dudgon and Helen Paull.

He shed light on his personal journey and his belief no one should have to travel along life on their own with no support.

Art of the Minds president Jules Haddock and staff from StandBy – Support After Suicide, Wellways and Foundation 61 also shared stories of impact.

Martin Duke and Neil Roche.

Mrs Haddock said the vulnerability and honesty on show made it an amazing event.

“Every speaker was just truly incredible.

“Robyn from StandBy spoke powerfully about her journey in losing two children to suicide and the importance of their services to help.

“As our special guest, Lance was just brilliant. He spoke about how everyone thought he was just this AFL player, but he divulged he had a drug and alcohol problem.

“The theme across the board was very much around, just because someone looks good, doesn’t mean they are good.

“A key takeaway was listening is the best thing. Don’t try problem solve. Just listen because talking to safe people is sometimes all people need.

“A huge thanks to all, and to Torquay Community Enterprise for their sponsorship.”
