Cowrie Market ready to assist Christmas shoppers

TORQUAY’S biggest market of the year is starting to take shape with more than 160 stallholders expected to take over Elephant Walk this Sunday, December 17.

Torquay Cowrie Market’s organisers are expecting its biggest turnout of the season this weekend as locals prepare to purchase locally made products ahead of Christmas.

Market committee member Tania Bartlett says the timing of Sunday’s market pairs up well with Torquay’s Carols by the Sea on Saturday night, creating for one festive weekend on Torquay’s foreshore.

“It’s going to be huge; we’ve got a lot more stallholders and a Christmas section by the Lions area with several activities on-hand for the kids, including a special visit from Santa himself,” Ms Bartlett said.

“January always used to be the biggest market in the season because we would have the most people in town, but our stallholder numbers for this coming market continue to rise to the point where we think that popularity has shifted.”

Sunday’s market, the fourth of the season, will run from 10am to 3pm and is free of charge to visitors.

Ms Bartlett and her fellow committee members Ellie Wilson and Martine Oderio say they are focused on bringing the Christmas market back to its roots.

“The thing for all three of us is continuing to make the market bigger and better than ever.

“All locally grown products, we’ve brought back that arts and crafts focus this season which the market has traditionally been known for.

“There’s something for everyone this Christmas at Sunday’s market, so come on down.”
