SURF Coast Secondary College student Jett Belle Graham-Russell has pirouetted her way to victory to be crowned Surf Coast Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year.

The 16-year-old has attended Torquay Dance Academy since it opened its doors in 2013, with her unwavering commitment to performance, leadership and mentoring younger dancers earning her the spotlight.

The award also acknowledges her achievement of an honours grading in the internationally recognised Cecchetti method exam.

“I honestly didn’t think that this would ever happen,” Jett said of the award.

“I just feel like it shouldn’t, it’s kind of crazy and I never expected this would come from dance. I’m so grateful, it’s amazing – it really is.”

Jett said she’s transported to another world when she is dancing – a place where she can release her inhibitions and be true to herself.

But she said performing to an audience was where she felt the most carefree.

“My teachers sometimes get mad at me in class because I don’t show much emotion or smile, but up on stage I’m a completely different person,” Jett said.

“I’m not nervous at all and just feel like no-one is watching me.”

Surf Coast Shire mayor Rose Hodge hailed Jett’s commitment to dance – from intellect to execution.

“Honours in any exam don’t come by accident, let alone in an international standard ballet exam,” Cr Hodge said.

“They are the product of dedication and in Jett’s case years of hard work and focus.

“We congratulate her on her ongoing achievements, on the example she sets, and on having been chosen as Young Citizen of the Year from such a fine field of seven nominees.

“Reading about all of their accomplishments, we can’t help but be impressed and inspired.”

Jett paid tribute to her teacher and academy principal Kim Fraser as one of her biggest supporters and inspirations, and said she derives motivation and satisfaction from making improvements.

Sam Suenderman, Jarrah Harris-Moore, Xavier Huxtable, Olivia Jenkins, Haylee Heard and Alexandra Marshall were also nominated for the award.
