Deakin announces grants for LGBTIQ+ community

July 24, 2019 BY

Deakin staff and students celebrate at Melbourne’s Pride March.

IN A move to build inclusion, Deakin is offering grants of up to $5,000 as part of a new program aimed at supporting the institution’s LGBTIQ+ community.

Grants are open to local not-for-profit, nongovernment, incorporated groups and organisations in Geelong, Warrnambool and Melbourne’s east; locations where Deakin has campuses.

Deakin is accepting applications from groups with a focus on the LGBTIQ+ community as well as groups seeking to include people who identify as LGBTIQ+ through wellbeing projects.

Vice-chancellor Professor Iain Martin said the university valued the rich dynamic of its student and staff.

“The entire community benefits when we embrace diversity and the value that people from all walks of life and backgrounds bring and the perspectives they offer,” Professor Martin said.

“We know members of our community who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer or questioning their gender or sexuality face unique challenges in our community.

“We are committed to supporting everyoneto reach their potential and contribute to the community and we offer supportive programs and environments to all our students and staff regardless of their background, sexuality, race or gender.”

Professor Martin said the grants will also help to build stronger communities.

Applications close on September 30. For more information on the grants, visit deakin.edu.au/lgbtiq or email [email protected].
