Deakin consolidates world ranking

August 22, 2018 BY

DEAKIN University has consolidated its position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), edging two places higher to 211th position in this year’s placings.

The ARWU data, released by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy last week, shows Deakin is ranked 10th in Australia, up from 11th nationally last year.

The university has maintained its ranking of 3rd in Victoria.

The ARWU ranks the world’s Top 500 universities and has tracked Deakin’s rapid rise in the past four years, beginning at 423rd in 2014, and improving to 398th the next year, before leaping ahead to 214th in 2016 and 213th last year.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO said the continued climb reflected the University’s commitment to constant improvement and a focus of excellence in everything we do.

“This outcome – which comes after ARWU ranked our School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences as number one for the past two years – means we have firmly consolidated our position in the top 215 institutions globally and we are humbled to once again be in such eminent company,” Professor den Hollander said.

“I am delighted for Deakin staff and students and thank our Alumni and partners for their support and assistance over the years.

“Deakin moved into the top 500 in the ARWU rankings only in 2014 and then into the top 300 two years later – reflecting our continued commitment to success in teaching and research.

“We are adamant that it is the value we place on our staff and excellence, in conjunction with a coherent and comprehensive strategy, which has led to these results.

“To continue to move up the world rankings and consolidate 10th spot in Australia is something that Deakin and the communities we serve can be very proud of. We shall continue our journey for the communities we serve.”

The ARWU, formerly known as the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ranking, is based on independently sourced data and focuses on significant indicators of research excellence.
