January 27, 2023 BY

ORGANISERS of the Deans Marsh Sheep Dog Trials have celebrated another fantastic event, which drew crowds of hundreds to Deans Marsh Recreation Reserve.

More than 400 spectators attended the three-day event as some of the state and country’s best sheep dogs showcased their skills alongside their dedicated handlers.

“It was a great event,” co-organiser Jill Stewart said.

“The whole town and a lot of visitors that arrived really enjoyed themselves, which was fantastic to hear, and the weather remained nice, making it all the better.

There were a range of obstacles that trainers and their dogs had to herd the sheep through.

“We’re looking forward to another great year in 2024 down in Deans Marsh.”

Conor McConnell and his dog McConnell’s Lad chalked an impressive performance on the final day in the headline Open category, accumulating 166 total points to take out the top result.

Roy Potticary and dog Delrae Eddie managed to tally 158 points to finish runner-up.

Sheep Dog training legend Pip Hudson was again impressive alongside dog MGG Esther, claiming the Improver division with 156 points, eight ahead of Chris Davies and Buruma Penny (144).

The Surf Coast town let everyone know about its annual dog trials over the weekend.

Potticary did claim division success in the Novice category, easily taking the win on the back of two near-perfect rounds by dog Zinc.

Even the younger pups got a chance to let out some of their energy.

Organisers Jill Stewart and Mark Fagan estimated upwards of 400 residents and visitors spectated the trials over the three days.
