DESIGN DIVIDE: Mixed response for Fishos car park changes
OPINION is split down the middle on a plan to revamp car parking at Torquay’s Fishermans Beach, with the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) now considering a new design for community feedback early this year.
The state government land manager has released an engagement summary on its Fishermans Beach car park upgrade plan, which went out for public consultation last year.
Just under half of survey responses stated designs from GORCAPA would improve existing conditions at the popular beach hotspot.
When asked whether the proposed designs would improve accessibility, circulation and movement of all users, 48 per cent of respondents said yes and 45 per cent said no.
Feedback was also split on use of boat trailer parking during peak periods, with 54 per cent of respondents in support.
Criticisms of the plan included in the report were a failure to acknowledge all usage needs of the carpark, concerns about disability access and hindering boat trailer turning circles.
Responders were also unimpressed with a plan to seal the overflow carpark, which they said would reduce the “coastal feel” of the area.
Supportive commenters liked improved safety by separating the small car park with the overflow area, reducing traffic in front of Salty Dog Café.
Of the options provided, respondents said they preferred option one (60 per cent), which included 45-degree parking and one-way loop traffic to access the entry/exit point from The Esplanade.
Torquay Outrigger Canoe Club was among the groups to object to the plans during exhibition in September and October, following concern the designs included no space for the club to store its vessels.
The local Surfrider Foundation branch also raised issue with reduction of car parking.
GORCAPA said it would consider the feedback to form a new design of the Fishos car park that it would release for community input, expected to be in February or March this year.
The full engagement summary is available at GORCAPA’s website.
